K-9 Unit

The East Lansing Police Department K-9 Unit consists of four teams (one handler and one dog per team). The highly skilled and trained teams include three German Shepherds and one Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah). Each K-9 Unit team is trained to track suspects and to locate people and/or articles.

The K-9 Unit is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. K-9 officers drive black, fully marked Chevy Tahoes.

The K-9 Unit performs a variety of functions, including:
  • assist in the prevention and detection of crime
  • bomb detection
  • building searches
  • locate lost or missing persons
  • narcotics detection
  • provide escort services
  • track and locate persons sought by police
