Off The Beaten Path

Introduction from University Student Commission

Welcome to the City of East Lansing! This guide, in its fourth edition, was created to provide important information regarding off-campus living. After moving into the City you will find, as many before you have, East Lansing to be a dynamic and vibrant community. It is the diversity of its residents—students, families, young professionals, and older residents—that make East Lansing such a livable community. Our residents represent many races, religions, and nationalities.

Unique challenges and opportunities develop when combining student life with independent off-campus living. When becoming a new resident of a community, it is important to find out local practices and expectations. For the most part, standards in East Lansing are similar to those in any other community where being a good neighbor and a responsible citizen are “keys” to having a successful stay.

The purpose of this guide is to provide students new to the City and off-campus living information about the rental/leasing process and the services and opportunities the City offers, to promote good relations within the East Lansing community, and to answer questions and avoid problems.
