Utility Hookups
Off the
Beaten
Path
Utilities such as
natural gas, electric and telephone usually must be arranged by the tenant.
This is best done prior to your move-in date.
Natural Gas
Gas is provided to
East Lansing by
Consumers Energy Company, 530 W. Willow, in
Lansing.
You can call them at 1-800-477-5050. To begin new service, phone Consumers
Energy a couple of days in advance. Be ready to give your name, social security
number, driver’s license number, previous and new address. If you have a poor
credit history, Consumers Energy may require a deposit. Remember, it is the
responsibility of every customer that their name is put on or taken off the
utility bill when they move.
If you smell gas,
call Consumers Energy immediately, day or night at 1-800-477-5050.
Customers are
billed monthly. If you are having problems paying your bill, call Consumers
Energy and have them set up a payment plan that is affordable.
Electric
Electricity is provided to the
East Lansing area by the Lansing Board of Water and Light, 123 W. Ottawa, (517)
371-6000 or Consumers Energy Company, 530 W. Willow, 1-800-477-5050. You must
have your driver’s license number and social security number. Service may be
provided the same day if you sign up in the early morning or afternoon. A
deposit will be required if your apartment or house has gas or electric heat.
Telephone
Phone service can be ordered from
Ameritech, (800) 244-4444; or, as of February 2000, MCI/WorldCom, (616)
224-4200.
Water and Sewer
Water and sewer service is
provided by the City of East Lansing, located at 410 Abbot Road. Call (517) 337-1731 for service and to set up your account. Remember, it is
your responsibility to have a “final meter reading” taken before you leave to
avoid being billed later. Be sure to pay any outstanding bills. Some property
owners require a copy of the paid water bill before your security deposit is
refunded.
Cable Television
Cable service is an option
provided by AT&T Cable Services, at 1070 Trowbridge Road in East Lansing.
For installation call (517) 349-8100. You will be required to pay
a deposit and an installation fee. Installation can take up to two weeks,
depending on demand. Cable offers local government and school programming as
well as a public access channel which may be used by any resident for community
programming.
