The Engineering Department is responsible for the design, construction and inspection of public infrastructure projects such as roadways, sidewalks, sanitary sewers, storm drainage and water distribution systems. In addition, the Department assists with the development of street and sidewalk repair programs and provides engineering services to other City departments.

The department also responds to resident and neighborhood concerns related to traffic and pedestrian safety and serves as the staff resource to the City Transportation Commission. The department performs traffic studies for the City Transportation Commission which provides valuable information used to enhance both vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow throughout the City.

In cooperation with the Planning and Community Development Department, the Engineering Department reviews the plans for private development projects. Site plans and construction sites are checked for compliance with City construction standards and other regulatory agency requirements. The Department also enforces the state soil erosion and sedimentation control regulations for both public and private construction projects.

Residents with questions or comments regarding City streets, sidewalks, utilities or traffic should contact the East Lansing Engineering Department at (517) 337-9459.
