The Driving Force
The men and women who drive the City's refuse and recycling trucks are of reflection of the quality of the City's waste collection program. Throughout the year they work through good weather and the bad to provide service to more than 6,000 single family households and approximately 50,000 multifamily residents and businesses who utilize the recycling drop off site. By the end of the day, each curbside recycling truck driver has picked up and hand sorted nearly 4,000 pounds of recyclables at about 500 stops. Our drop off recycling truck driver has hauled and sorted nearly 7,500 pounds of recyclables and each refuse truck driver has collected about 16,000 pounds of refuse at nearly 600 stops....not to mention the yard waste that they also collect in the spring through fall. Some of us grumble about taking the trash out once a week - these City workers collect it hundreds of times a day! Feel free to say hi to them on their route. They are a good source of information and can often answer your refuse or recycling questions.

Curbside Recycling Collection

These two employees combine to collect an average of 4.5 tons (or about 9,000 pounds) of recyclables per day! They work on the routes four days a week in all kinds of weather conditions and deserve a lot of credit for their hard work. Last year they collected a total of 943 tons of recyclables.

Britton Moeckel is one of two Sanitation Division employees who collect curbside recycling. You will see Britton driving truck number 111. Although he is the newest employee in the Division, he has quickly mastered operating the truck and collecting your recyclables.

Victoria Joseph rounds out our crew of curbside recycling drivers. She has been employed with the City since October of 2006. Victoria guides truck 113 through our neighborhoods. She seems to always have a smile on her face and enjoys her job. Say hi to her next time you see her picking up your blue bin.

Curbside Refuse Collection

Last year the Sanitation Division collected 14,750 compacted cubic yards of refuse. That comes out to about 40 pounds of refuse per East Lansing household per week. Each driver collects roughly 20,000 pounds of refuse per day!

Jason Chubb collects refuse curbside in truck 106. He's been working for the City since October of 2006. Using the trucks robotic arm, Jason is able to quickly and efficiently collect refuse which helps keep our neighborhoods clean and looking good.

Along with Jason, Dan Guerrero operates one of the two automated refuse trucks which collect curbside refuse. Dan has been working for the City since August of 2005. He's seen here in this picture at the wheel of truck 107.

Drop-off Recycling Collection

Last year residents recycled 1,245 tons of recyclables at the City's drop-off recycling sites. The City moved the recycling site previously at Merritt Road on the east side of the City to our new Department of Public Works facility on State Road. The site is located 1.5 miles north of the Lake Lansing/Coolidge Road intersection where Coolidge Road ends at State Road. Please come visit our new site.

Floyd Jones is a veteran employee in the Sanitation Division. He has been working for the City since September of 1986. Floyd has performed various jobs for the Division including curbside refuse and recycling collection. He's now in charge of collecting recyclables from our two drop-off sites full time.

Relief Drivers

Kevin Farmer has been working for the City since August of 2005. He recently switched from being a full time driver of one of the City's refuse trucks to now being a relief driver.

Rob Hernandez is one of four relief drivers working for the City. He's been employed since August of 2006 and has performed multiple tasks for the City.

Greg McCafferty is another one of the City's relief drivers. He's pictured here in front of one of the City's refuse trucks. Greg has been employed with the City since August of 2006.
Margo Beyer rounds out the crew of relief drivers. She's been working for the City since August of 2006. She has done a wide range of work for the Sanitation Division including refuse collection, recycling, yard waste collection and more.

Sanitation Division Supervisor

Steve Gordon is the Sanitation Division Supervisor. Steve is a long-time employee with the City. He started working in 1974 and has put in nearly 32 years of service. Steve has worked on various tasks for the Public Works Department including refuse and recycling collection for many years. He's been the Division Supervisor the past eleven years.
