Streets
The City of East Lansing has over 21 miles of major streets and 8 miles of State
Highway trunklines located within the city providing regional and area access to
residential and commercial sectors. Over 60 miles of residential and local streets
provide access to the City's residential neighborhoods.
The Streets Department is responsible for maintaining this street network and provides the following services: street sweeping, street paving, fall leaf removal, snow removal and salting, traffic control and signage, crosswalk maintenance, and pot hole repair. For information on any of these programs, please contact the Public Works Department at 337-9459.
Sewer
The Sewer Department is responsible for maintaining 700,000 feet of public sewers,
manholes, catch basins and drainage gates. The City's sewer collection system is
a combination of sanitary sewers, storm sewers and combined sewers. A Federally
and State mandated Combined Sewer Overflow Control program is nearing completion
and is expected to substantially reduce the environmental concerns about pollution
in the Red Cedar River. If you experience a problem with your sewer or street flooding,
call the Public Works Department at 337-9459. After-hours emergencies call 351-4220.
Water
The Water Department maintains over 400,000 feet of various size water
mains and 700 fire hydrants throughout the city and installs, maintains and reads
over 8,000 individual water meters. For information on water problems or meter readings
