The City Council is the legislative and policy-making body for the City government. Five Councilmembers are elected at-large for overlapping four-year terms. The Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem are appointed by the elected Council. The Council also appoints the City Manager, who is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the City government. They also appoint the City Attorney.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • City of East Lansing's Perspective on Barnes & Noble Closing - At its Jan. 17, 2012 meeting, the East Lansing City Council heard a written statement from Planning Director Tim Dempsey regarding the City's perspective on Barnes & Noble closing.
  • City Manager Search Update - At its Jan. 11 special work session, City Council narrowed a field of nine semi-finalists down to six finalists for the East Lansing city manager position. The city manager finalists will visit in late January to tour the community, meet community members and participate in interviews. Candidate bios are available.
  • Accountability and Transparency - The City's Guide to Fiscal Status and PerformanceThe City recently compiled a Citizen's Guide and Performance Dashboard to provide residents with a transparent understanding of the organization's finances as well as financial and operating measures.
  • Gavel-to-gavel coverage of regular East Lansing City Council meetings are televised on Channel 22 (WELG) and available to view online courtesy of WKAR.
  • 2010 Annual Report - Check out East Lansing's annual progress report for 2010
