EAST LANSING, Mich. — As East Lansing City Council continues its national search for East Lansing’s next city manager, it has been announced that Deputy City Manager George Lahanas will serve as interim city manager.

Lahanas has served as East Lansing’s deputy city manager since July 2008 and began his tenure with the City in January 1999. He was initially hired as a labor relations specialist and was promoted to Human Resources administrator in January 2001. In December 2001, Lahanas was appointed director of Human Resources and, in October 2005, he was promoted to director of Administrative Services, a position that provides oversight to several City divisions, including Communications, City Clerk, Information Technology and Human Resources. Upon his appointment to deputy city manager, Lahanas continued his responsibilities as the director of Human Resources and Administrative Services.

“George has a long tenure with the City of East Lansing, during which time he has proven to be a highly skilled, hard-working professional,” said East Lansing Mayor Victor Loomis. “We have utmost confidence in George and his leadership skills and believe he will do an exceptional job as interim city manager.”

Among his many accomplishments, Lahanas has been an active participant in annual budgeting processes for the City and has served as the chief spokesperson for the City’s labor relations activities. He also has served as a co-chair of the City’s Health Care Task Force for several years, a labor-management collaboration that has effectively limited City health insurance cost increases to 3.5 percent each year.
Lahanas holds a Master of Public Administration from Northern Michigan University, with a concentration in personnel and labor relations, and a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from Northern Michigan University. Lahanas has been a member of the International City Manager’s Association since 2011 and the Michigan Public Employer Labor Relations Association since 1996. He also has been a member of Rotary International since 2002.
