Disability Parking

Parking spaces for Persons with Disabilities are available in all City lots and garages. A valid, state-issued tag or license plate must be properly displayed when parking in a designated handicap space. The individual to whom the hangtag or license plate was issued must be in the vehicle when it is parked and when the vehicle leaves the parking space or attended lot.

Michigan's Disability Parking Law

Disability parking placards and disability license plates issued or renewed after May 1, 1995 do not qualify for free parking at a meter or public lot unless a doctor certifies the placard holder meets the additional criteria required for a free parking privilege. A disability license plate by itself does not allow free parking. The disability license plate must also display a placard with a free parking sticker. According to the law, to qualify for free parking privileges, you must be a licensed driver and be physically unable to perform one or more of the following:

  • insert coins or take parking lot tokens
  • reach more than 42 inches from the ground
  • approach a parking meter due to the use of a wheelchair or similar device
  • walk over twenty feet

Steps you must take to qualify for free parking

To qualify for free parking, your doctor needs to complete a new Disability Parking Placard Application certifying free parking eligibility. Your completed application and your current parking placard must be submitted to the Secretary of State. A replacement placard with the "yellow" free parking sticker attached will then be issued.
