East Lansing City Council adopted a new party litter ordinance in 2011, which modifies the City’s previous ordinance. The ordinance, drafted with the assistance of student input, will help to create a clean community for all East Lansing residents.
The new party litter ordinance, Ordinance 1260, includes a provision that allows Parking & Code Enforcement (PACE) officers to issue a ticket without a prior warning if the offense is deemed serious and establishes a tiered fine system for multiple party litter offenses. It should be noted that warnings will still be issued for minor offenses at PACE’s discretion.
A tiered fine system for multiple party litter offenses on a property was also established by the ordinance — allowing PACE officers to fine $50 for a first offense, $100 for a second offense, $200 for a third offense and $400 for a fourth offense.
It should be noted that warnings will still be issued for minor offenses and PACE officers retain discretion to simply issue warnings rather than tickets. The no-warning ticket will be reserved for addressing egregious offenses, as well as properties where repeated offenses occur.
