Freedom of Information Act Requests (FOIA)

The Freedom of Information Act (Act 442 of 1976) establishes a citizen's legal right to access government records and information upon request. The Records Bureau processes only police incident reports through the FOIA process. All other City of East Lansing FOIA requests should contact the City Clerk.

Submitting a FOIA Request

FOIA requests must be made in writing via the FOIA Request for Public Records application.

FOIA requests are subject to a fee for labor costs billed at a rate ranging from $5 to $7.50 per 15 minutes spent processing the request for all documents, photographs, video and audio recordings. Documents which are stored off-site are subject to an additional recovery charge ranging from $5 to $20 for each document requested.
