Refuse Collection

The City provides waste collection for single family households, duplexes and households with one to four units. Residents can dispose of refuse in either an Easy Cart or Yellow City-issued trash bags. [Refuse/Recycling Routes]

 

1) Easy Carts

Residents have the option of purchasing a 32-, 64- or 96-gallon Easy Cart for use with disposing refuse. Refuse should be contained inside the cart and placed at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on collection day. Refuse that exceeds the Easy Cart must be placed in yellow bags. Easy Carts must be purchased at DPW by calling (517) 337-9459.

Easy Cart use is mandatory for Class 3 and 4 rental properties, and for residents in the Hawk Nest, Eagle Eye and Villas at Stratford Place communities.

 

2) Yellow City-Issued Trash Bags

Residents who do not wish to use an Easy Cart may use City-issued yellow trash bags to dispose of refuse. Yellow bags can be purchased in packages of five for $7.50 at numerous locations. The bags are available in the following area locations:

 

7-Eleven #16 – 311 Grove St.
7-Eleven #104 – 918 E. Grand River Ave.
7-Eleven #155 – 740 W. Lake Lansing Road
East Lansing City Hall – 410 Abbot Road
East Lansing Department of Public Works – 1800 E. State Road
Goodrich’s Shop-Rite – 940 Trowbridge Road
L&L Food Centers – 1671 Haslett Road
Meijer’s – 2055 W. Grand River Ave.
Meijer’s – 1350 W. Lake Lansing Road
Quality Dairy – 808 E. Michigan Ave.
Quality Dairy – 1109 E. Michigan Ave.
East Lansing Hannah Community Center – 819 Abbot Road


No-Fee Holiday Refuse Collection: Dec. 20-Dec. 30, 2011
During this time, residents can dispose of extra refuse without the use of a yellow City trash bag. Refuse is collected on residents’ normal collection day only, except where changes are necessary due to the holidays. Yard waste and bulk items are not included. All bags must weigh no more than 40 pounds. The City encourages residents to help keep disposal costs down by recycling their extra corrugated cardboard and boxboard at the City’s drop-off sites.
