Mt. Hope Road Reconstruction Project - Road Closure Information

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Crews began Phase I of the Mt. Hope Road reconstruction project on Wednesday, July 29, causing single lane closures between Harrison Road and Farm Lane.

Preliminary work includes ditch, culvert and storm sewer work. Beginning in mid August, Mt. Hope Road will be closed between Harrison Road and Farm Lane as constructions crews begin the process of crushing and shaping the existing pavement, grading, re-paving and striping the roadway. During this time, traffic will be detoured to Forest Road and Farm Lane. The tentative end date for Phase I of the project is Aug. 29.

Phase II and III of the Mt. Hope Road reconstruction project will tentatively begin at the end of August and is slated to be completed by the end of September. Phase II consists of reconstructing the north half of Mt. Hope Road, west of Harrison Road to the City of East Lansing’s westerly limits (.5 miles). Phase III consists of reconstructing the south half of Mt. Hope Road, west of Harrison Road to the City of East Lansing’s westerly limits (.5 miles). During Phase II and III, two-way traffic will be maintained on the other half of the roadway west of Harrison Road; however traffic shifts at the intersection of Mt. Hope Road and Harrison Road are expected to cause delays. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternative routes when possible.

The Mt. Hope Road reconstruction project is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, an economic stimulus package signed into law by U.S. President Barack Obama on February 17, 2009. The City of East Lansing qualified for ARRA funds by presenting a “shovel-ready” construction plan for the Mt. Hope project earlier this year.
