Emerging Leaders Program

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2013 East Lansing Emerging Leaders Program (ELELP), a six-week course in civic engagement designed to support today’s emerging leaders. The program was previously offered from 2007-2009.

Participants in the program will hone leadership and public service skills as they study a wide range of topics, including: the history and structure of local government, municipal finance, the importance of community building, regional partnerships and entrepreneurialism. Participants will be shown a comprehensive picture of the City of East Lansing, all in an effort to encourage broad participation in community leadership and civic affairs.

Program instruction is provided by community, business, university and governmental leaders, while offering participants the opportunity to meet and talk with local officials and other decision makers. Participation in the program positions citizens to assume leadership positions within their East Lansing neighborhood or to serve as knowledgeable members of one of the more than 20 City-sanctioned Boards or Commissions

Goals and Objectives

The goals of the ELELP are to develop graduates who:

  • have a broad understanding of the community;
  • are comfortable and skilled neighborhood leaders;
  • can serve as a community resource for information;
  • have developed a network of neighborhood contacts; and,
  • are positioned to be positively engaged in community service activities.

Eligibility

ELELP applicants must be residents of East Lansing, 18 years or older. There is no charge to participate, but the class size is limited to 20. Applicants will need to complete an application and participate in an evaluation and selection process. Applicants cannot be running for, or currently serving in, an elected office.

Applications

Applicants can complete an online application, download a paper application or pick one up in the East Lansing City Manager’s Office, Room 207 in East Lansing City Hall, 410 Abbot Road. Applications must be submitted by January 25, 2013 for consideration.
