The City of East Lansing appreciates the tremendous contributions of volunteers to our community. Volunteers help in all facets of city government including elections, community events, festivals, senior programs, recycling efforts, parks and recreation services and more.

The All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre offers young people of all backgrounds to produce professional quality plays. AECT brings four major productions to the Greater Lansing community each year with the help of hundreds of youth from throughout the region.

 

Possible volunteer positions include:

 

  • assist with set building
  • assist with costumes
  • assist with front of house activities during shows
  • assist with green room monitoring during shows

The East Lansing Art Festival brings artists from across North America to the heart of downtown East Lansing for a two-day event featuring fine art and craft, live music, an international food court, a children’s activities and much more.

 

Possible volunteer positions include:

  • set up/ clean up
  • information booth

Community Events produces and sponsors more than 50 community events and festivals each year. The goal of the program is to provide rich arts and cultural events to the residents of East Lansing and its neighboring cities.

As the official record keeper of the City's official documents, the City Clerk's office holds the history of East Lansing in our files. We administer various business licences and we are also responsible for conducting all federal, state, and local elections held in the City.

 

Possible volunteer duties can include but are not limited to:

 

  • managing voter registration records
  • licensing administration
  • archiving & records retention
  • customer service/counter assistance
  • general office assistance
  • election inspectors (during elections only)

The Department of Public Works promote waste reduction, reuse, recycling and proper disposal through a variety of environmental services and special events.

 

Possible volunteer duties can include but are not limited to:

 

  • Project Pride
  • Recycle Rama

The East Lansing Environmental Stewardship Program focuses on restoring the health of park biotic communities by removing problematic invasive plant species and replacing them with native species. The program utilizes volunteers to carry out the program in a series of volunteer work days. The Environmental Stewardship program tailors workday activities for all ages and abilities.

 

Volunteers work with qualified City staff to:

 

  • pull and bag garlic mustard
  • cut, clip and pull Buckthorn and other invasive
  • remove Grape Vine
  • clear windfall
  • plant native perennials and seedling

The Department of Parks, Recreation & Arts provides quality facilities and opportunities for leisure through active community participation and support.

 

Volunteer opportunities exist in the following areas:

 

  • recreation and athletic programs (ie. parent coaches)
  • park stewardship work days
  • special events (ie. Daddy/Daughter Dance)
  • children's theatre
  • ALFA Day Service Program

Since 1972, the Prime Time Seniors' Program has served as a community focal point for retirees and their families in an atmosphere of respect, trust, empowerment and support. Last year alone, 150 volunteers contributed moer than 3,500 hours of service.

The Summer Solstice Jazz Festival, co-produced by the City of East Lansing, Wharton Center for Performing Arts and the MSU College of Music, is a two-day, jazz-infused weekend in downtown East Lansing.

The East Lansing Public Library welcomes the assistance of volunteers for a variety of duties throughout the Library. The library can accommodate regular weekly volunteer hours or short term/project volunteer hours, dependent upon needs.

 

Possible volunteer duties can include but are not limited to:

 

  • organizing library materials
  • maintaining children's area
  • assisting with set up of children's programs and crafts
  • summer reading program help
  • shelving books
