COVID-19 Advisory for Saint Patrick's Day

We are continuing to strongly urge student residents, visitors and other community members to take an active role in preventing the spread of this virus by avoiding large gatherings/parties during Saint Patrick's Day for their safety and for their friends’ and loved ones’ safety.

If you do celebrate, be advised that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed a new executive order temporarily prohibiting ALL events over 50 people and gatherings in shared indoor spaces over 50 people beginning Tuesday, March 17 at 9 a.m. Please also be advised that the East Lansing Police Department will be fully staffed on Saint Patrick's Day and will be enforcing all relevant party/noise ordinances (nuisance parties, blocking streets/sidewalks, etc.).

In addition to the governor’s executive order, guidelines issued by the federal government on Monday, March 16 say to avoid social gatherings in groups of more than 10 people. Please think of the people around you in this extremely difficult time and do the right thing.

Prevention Guidance
The best prevention for viruses, such as influenza, the common cold or COVID-19 is:

  • If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19, call your health care provider. If you do not have a health care provider, call the nearest hospital.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If not available, use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or upper sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home, and avoid contact with others.
  • Replace handshakes with elbow bumps.
  • Stay at least 6 feet away from others when in a public setting.
