Hazardous Sidewalk Program

The City of East Lansing's Hazardous Sidewalk Program provides for the inspection, notification and repair to sidewalks located within the public right-of-way. The sidewalk system has been divided into 11 sidewalk districts.

Property owners are responsible for the maintenance and cost of repairs to sidewalks adjacent to their property; however, in some instances the City may be responsible for replacement costs if the damage was caused by tree roots from a parkway tree or settlement of trenches over utilities installed by the City (or its contractors). The City is also responsible for sidewalk ramps at street intersections.
