Household Hazardous Waste

Ingham County residents can dispose of common household hazardous items, including oil-based paints and solvents at the Ingham County Human Services Building, 5303 South Cedar Street, in Lansing. The collection schedule is every Tuesday and Thursday from May to the end of September (except the Fourth of July) from 2-6 p.m. Learn more.

Items Accepted
  • Acids & bases (pool chemicals, toilet bowl cleaners)
  • Automotive products (brake, steering, transmission fluid)
  • Aerosol containing products (empty cans can be recycled)
  • Asphalt sealer & roofing tar
  • Pesticides (weed killers, insecticides)
  • Cell phones
  • Cleaners & polishers
  • Fluorescent lights and ballasts (removed from fixture)
  • Fuel oil
  • Flammables (gasoline, lighter fluids, etc.)
  • Home repair products (glues, caulk, etc.)
  • Medications (over the counter & prescription)
  • Mercury (thermometers, thermostats. Place in a Ziploc bag)
  • Oil paint & paint products (thinners, mineral spirits, stains)
  • Photographic chemicals
  • Propane tanks (1 pound size)
  • Wood preservatives

  • Smoke alarms and Carbon monoxide alarms
  • Cooking oil
  • Drywall compound
  • Medications
  • Propane tanks larger than one pound
  • Latex paints (disposal tips)
