K9 Unit

The East Lansing Police Department K9 Unit consists of three teams (one handler and one dog per team). The highly skilled and trained teams include three German Shepherds. Each K9 Unit team is trained to track suspects and to locate people and/or articles.

The K9 Unit is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. K9 officers drive black, fully marked Chevy Tahoes.


The K9 Unit performs a variety of functions, including:
  • assist in the prevention and detection of crime
  • bomb detection
  • building searches
  • locate lost or missing persons
  • narcotics detection
  • provide escort services
  • track and locate persons sought by police
