[ARCHIVED] Fall Bulk Leaf Collection Update and City-Wide Extension of Program

EAST LANSING, Mich. — East Lansing Department of Public Works (DPW) crews will be completing the final published leaf collection on the City of East Lansing’s east side before the end of this week. They will spend the remainder of this week collecting leaves throughout the City, regardless of area, to collect as many piles that have been raked to the curb as possible.

In order to accommodate the snow event and prolonged cold temperatures that prevented many residents from raking leaves to the curb over the past week, DPW will also be extending fall bulk leaf collection to the week of Nov. 25 for the entire City. All residents, regardless of whether they are on the east or west side of the City, should have leaves raked to the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25 to ensure collection.

Important things to keep in mind:

  • All leaves raked to the curb by Nov. 25 may not be collected prior the Thanksgiving holiday. Crews will return after the holiday to collect in areas they were unable to complete.

  • Residents are encouraged to rake any leaves that have fallen to the curb as soon as possible. As highlighted last week, the later into the year, the greater the chance of a snow event occurring prior to the last leaves falling. This greatly reduces DPW’s ability to collect bulk leaves due to the equipment and staffing needed to manage snow and ice removal in the community.

  • Residents are reminded that leaves should be raked to the curb or edge of the road and not into the roadway. A significant amount of roadway flooding is caused when drainage structures are clogged with leaves in areas where they have been raked into the roadway.
