ELPRA Tentatively Planning to Offer Buddy Basketball Program this Winter

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Department of Parks, Recreation and Arts (ELPRA) is tentatively planning to offer its popular Buddy Basketball Program* this winter.

Buddy Basketball is a co-ed program that introduces children in kindergarten and first grade to basketball. The program emphasizes fun and skill development in dribbling, passing, shooting and other ball-handling skills as well as group coordination and sportsmanship.

The six-week program will take place on Saturdays at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road, and each child will be assigned a 50-minute session in the morning or early afternoon. The 2021 Buddy Basketball program will run from Jan.23-Feb. 27 and the last two sessions will consist of team scrimmages.

In the interest of the children’s and coach’s health, ELPRA will be limiting the number of spectators to one per child. Additionally, each child will have their temperature taken and will be given a COVID-19 screening questionnaire. Participants will also need to wear a clean face covering for each session.

The cost to participate in Buddy Basketball is $65 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Registration forms are due Friday, Jan. 8 and, as part of the registration fee, participants will receive a basketball to keep.

Community members can register their child for Buddy Basketball by visiting https://cityofeastlansing.com/sports. Parents will be mailed a confirmation letter with their child’s assigned time.

* The program will be subject to current COVID-19 health orders and will only be offered if permitted under those orders. In the event that the program is canceled, all fees will be reimbursed.
