EAST LANSING, Mich. — The City of East Lansing Community Events program will offer audiences an action-packed week of events, including storytelling, open mic, an outdoor film and lots of live music. All events are FREE!
Play in the Park
Play in the Park, an interactive children’s entertainment series, will continue Tuesday, July 14 and continue every Tuesday at 7 p.m. through July 28 in Valley Court Park, 280 Valley Court Park.
Creative Storyteller Karen Czarnik will take part in the series on Tuesday, July 14 at 7 p.m. Czarnik integrates stories, music and fun into an interactive program for the whole family!
Play in the Park will also feature Superhero Science with the Michigan Science Center on July 21 and a Guy Louis Summer Concert on July 28.
3rd Wednesday Open Mic
The 3rd Wednesday Open Mic will continue on Wednesday, July 15 from 7-9 p.m. in Ann Street Plaza in downtown East Lansing. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. and is on a first come, first serve basis. There is a two-song limit. All skill levels are welcome.
The event is led by local singer-songwriter Jen Sygit. With three albums under her belt, Sygit tours regionally and continues to be a regular in the Lansing music scene. Jen is also host of the popular open mic at Dagwood’s Tavern in Lansing. 3rd Wednesday Open Mic is sponsored by the Downtown Management Board.
The final open mic will take place on Aug. 19.
Moonlight Film Series
The Moonlight Film Series, an outdoor film series, will continue Thursday, July 16 and continue every Thursday through Aug. 13 in Valley Court Park, 280 Valley Court. The series takes place at 9:30 p.m. in July and 9 p.m. in August. Bring a blanket, sleeping bag or lawn chair and enjoy a night under the stars. Live music begins one hour prior to the film.
“Jurassic Park” (PG-13) will be shown on Thursday, July 16 at 9:30 p.m. During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaurs to run wild. Local band, No Bail, will perform prior to the film at 8:30 p.m.
The Moonlight Film Festival will feature Big Hero 6 (PG) on July 23, Ernest and Celestine (NR) on July 30, Cinderella (PG) on August 6, Pitch Perfect (PG-13 edited) on August 13. Films are at 9:30 p.m. in July and 9 p.m. in August.
Summer Concert Series
The Summer Concert Series, featuring six weekends of live music, will continue on Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 1 in downtown East Lansing. The music series takes place from 7-9 p.m. in Ann Street Plaza. The concerts will be canceled in the event of rain. Bring a lawn chair and dancing shoes!
Kathleen & the Bridge Street Band will perform on Friday, July 17 from 7-9 p.m. in Ann Street Plaza. The band draws influence from all things blues, soul, rock and R&B. The band features Kathleen Walters (lead singer), Angelo Santelli (guitarist), Louis Rudner (bassist), Eric Payne (drummer) Brad Fowler and Jon Gerwitz (The Horns of Terror).
May Erlewine will perform on Saturday, July 18 from 7-9 p.m. in Ann Street Plaza. Singer-songwriter May Erlewine plays guitar, fiddle, viola and piano. The sounds and influences you'll hear in her music range from good old-fashioned folk and country swing to soul singers, rock and music from all over the wide world. It's all bundled together with stories and melodies.
The 2015 lineup will also feature Dragspel feat. Mike Lynch & Rob Klajda (Friday, July 24), Deacon Earl & The Congregation (Saturday, July 25), Cuatro Sur (Friday, July 31) and Greg Nagy (Saturday, Aug. 1).
