EAST LANSING, Mich. — At this past Tuesday night’s East Lansing City Council meeting, Sparrow Hospital presented the Tri-County Paramedic of the Year award to East Lansing Firefighter/Paramedic Matthew Sterling.
The award is presented annually to an exemplary paramedic in the tri-county area and the selection is based upon recommendations from staff working in the Sparrow Hospital Emergency Room. Sparrow Hospital EMS Director John Derry, DO, presented the award to Sterling at the meeting and had this to say about him: “He has consistently provided that level of care that when you hear his voice on the radio, there is a sense of calm. When I’m the doctor that he’s bringing a patient to, I know that he’s giving me an accurate report and that he’s going to provide the level of care that I would want for my family and friends.”
Sterling has served as a firefighter/paramedic with the East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) since September 2012. As part of his service with ELFD, he is also an EMS instructor and is one of two ELFD firefighter/paramedics trained to support the Ingham County Tactical Response Team.
“Sterling has a very strong work ethic and is highly regarded in the EMS field,” said East Lansing Fire Chief Randy Talifarro. “We are fortunate to have him serving the East Lansing community and his recent recognition from Sparrow Hospital is very well deserved.”
