EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Public Library (ELPL) is excited to announce that the 2.0 Maker Studio, located in downtown East Lansing on the second floor of the East Lansing Marriott at University Place, will remain open for an additional 10 months, through May 2016.
“The maker studio has been so well received.” said ELPL Director Kristin Shelley. “With the upcoming renovation of the main library, we knew we wanted to continue to provide a space for creation, innovation and programming during the construction. The ELPL 2.0 Maker Studio is the perfect place to make that vision a reality.”
“It is exciting to learn that the library’s 2.0 Maker Studio will remain open through May of next year,” said East Lansing Mayor Nathan Triplett. “The downtown space has proven to be a destination for the community, where creativity has no limits. I am looking forward to the space’s continued success over the coming 10 months.”
The downtown location will continue to feature 3D printers, sewing machines, bike repair facilities, a LEGO hackspace, an Arduino lab and space for other projects, meetups, workshops and more. It will also provide an overflow space for regular library programs that may need to be relocated during the renovation of the main library, which is slated to begin in November 2015.
The ELPL maker studios (the other studio is located inside the library) recently completed the 100th 3D print job request. People of all ages and backgrounds have brought their original designs, prototypes and artwork to the maker studios and have walked out with finished products.
ELPL 2.0 Maker Studio Technology Specialist Joe Carr said, “It’s exciting to see the creative vision within our community come to life, especially as it’s made tangible through 3D printing at the maker studios. We’ve helped make everything from custom toys to engineering projects to beautiful new art. I can’t wait to see what’s next.”
The ELPL 2.0 Maker Studio hours are as follows:
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays: noon-6 p.m.
Saturdays: 11-5 p.m.
ELPL also offers limited 3D printing at the main library’s Maker Studio, 950 Abbot Road in East Lansing. Also available at the main library are computers equipped with the Adobe Creative Cloud, Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro X as well as equipment for music production, scanning and editing photographs, digital design and more.
