EAST LANSING, Mich. — At last night’s East Lansing City Council meeting, the newly elected East Lansing City Councilmembers and the new Council-elected Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem took their Oath of Office.
East Lansing City Clerk Marie Wicks administered the Oath of Office to Erik Altmann, Shanna Draheim and Mark Meadows for their four-year terms on the East Lansing City Council, which will run through November 2019.
Following the Oath of Office for the newly elected Councilmembers, the sitting Council elected Mark Meadows to serve as East Lansing’s new Mayor and Ruth Beier to serve as East Lansing’s new Mayor Pro Tem. Mayor Meadows and Mayor Pro Tem Beier will hold these offices for a two-year term.
The City of East Lansing operates under the council-manager form of government. This progressive-inspired system of government was designed to remove politics from municipal administration and is one of two main variations of representative municipal government in the United States. East Lansing’s government is comprised of both elected officials and a City Manager appointed by the East Lansing City Council. The five officials elected to serve on the East Lansing City Council are the policy-making and legislative body for the City government. These Councilmembers are elected at large for four overlapping years. The Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem are elected by voters as Councilmembers and then elected to the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem positions by the sitting Council.
