EAST LANSING, Mich. – The East Lansing Department of Public Works crews worked continuously yesterday and overnight to clear major streets, the majority of City-maintained sidewalks and City facilities.
The crews also started the clearing of local streets last night, which was completed late this morning.
Throughout the remainder of today, crews will be cleaning up trouble spots and salting hills and stop sign areas. Crews will also complete the clearing of City-maintained sidewalks throughout the course of the day.
Snow and Ice Removal Requirements for Property OwnersEast Lansing property owners (includes residents, business owners, landlords/renters and any other owners of property) are encouraged to keep the City’s snow and ice removal requirements in mind for sidewalks adjacent to their properties.
Snow that accumulates before noon on a sidewalk must be cleared by midnight the same day and snow that accumulates after noon on a sidewalk must be cleared by midnight of the following day. For snow showers that occur on more than one consecutive day, snow must be cleared by the above stated times or within 48 hours after the first snowfall began, whichever is sooner. Ice should be cleared or an abrasive (salt, sand, etc.) should be applied within 12 hours of formation.
“We would like to thank residents for their continued efforts to keep community sidewalks safe and passable for pedestrians,” said East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas.
Sidewalk snow removal enforcement begins at midnight tonight. If residents would like to request enforcement of a property, they can call the ELPD non-emergency phone number and leave a message: (517) 351-4220, Option 2.
Snow Deposited in DrivewaysThe City has heard some resident feedback about snow deposited into driveways/sidewalks by snow plows. During the course of normal snow plow operations, snow placed in residents’ driveways/sidewalks is unavoidable. The plows are angled to the right for plowing from the center line of the street to the curb. For this reason, a certain amount of snow will be deposited in driveways or sidewalks in close proximity to the street. It is the responsibility of property owners to remove this snow.
To minimize the amount of snow deposited in driveways, community members can try clearing a space to the side of their driveway to allow a spot for the snow to go.
