[ARCHIVED] Boil Water Advisory Lifted for East Lansing and Meridian Township

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Meridian Water and Sewer Authority (ELMWSA), in consultation with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, has lifted the Boil Water Advisory. East Lansing and Meridian Township residents can resume the use of tap water for all purposes.

The test results for the first and second round of samples collected from the water treatment plant and the distribution systems in East Lansing and Meridian Township have come back negative for harmful bacteria. The test results indicate that the distribution systems were never contaminated. It is not necessary for residents to do anything, such as in-home flushing, prior to resuming full use of their tap water.

On the morning of Friday, Aug. 5, the Boil Water Advisory was issued due to an upset in one of the filters at the plant, which had the potential of causing harmful bacteria to enter the water supply distribution systems. Out of an abundance of caution and for the sake of public health, the advisory was issued.

“The safety of our community members was always the first priority during this incident,” said East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas. “We understand this was an inconvenience for members of both the East Lansing and Meridian Township communities and we would like to thank everyone for their patience over the past few days.”

Community members are asked to help share this information with all other people who drink East Lansing and/or Meridian Township water, especially those who may not receive this information directly.
