[ARCHIVED] ELPD Responds to Three Gun-Related Incidents over the Weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) responded to three gun-related incidents in the East Lansing community this past weekend.

ELPD units were dispatched to the Hillcrest-Elm intersection at 2:57 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 on a report of a male subject walking down the street with a long gun. Upon arrival, ELPD officers located the subject still in possession of the weapon. Upon seeing the officers, the subject dropped the weapon and tried to flee the area. He was eventually caught and taken into custody. The suspect, an MSU student from Troy, was arrested for disorderly conduct. The weapon was determined to be a pellet gun.

Approximately 20 minutes later that same night, ELPD units were dispatched to the area of Burcham Drive and Berkshire Lane on a report of a subject actively shooting a gun. ELPD units located the subject near the Snyder-Cornell intersection. The suspect, 23-year-old Alec Freeman Keller of East Lansing, was taken into custody. Upon searching the suspect, a loaded .45 caliber handgun and multiple magazines were discovered. Upon further investigation, it was determined that Keller had fired multiple rounds in multiple locations, including the 600 block of Cornell Avenue and the 500 block of Bailey Street. On Bailey Street, at least two rounds entered a home while the residents were sleeping. The suspect has been charged with:

1) Discharging a firearm at a dwelling – 10-year felony
2) Carrying a concealed weapon – five-year felony
3) Felony firearms – two-year felony
4) Possession of a firearm while intoxicated – 93-year misdemeanor

Keller is currently lodged at the Ingham County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

On Sunday, Oct. 23 at 2 a.m., ELPD units were dispatched to 2501 Abbot Road on a report of shots being fired. According to reports from witnesses, the suspect with the gun initially fired one round into the air after a fight had ensued. Then, while being chased by a group of people, the suspect fired four to five more times. The suspect; described as a black male, approximately 6’ tall and 20-22 years old; fled the scene with a white male in his late 20’s; approximately 5’5” tall with tattoos on his neck and possibly wearing saggy grey sweatpants and a grey shirt. It is possible that they fled the scene in a black vehicle. The suspect is still outstanding. No one was injured in this incident and it is still under investigation.
