[ARCHIVED] City of East Lansing Partners with Tuesday Toolmen Program to Undertake Housing Project for Senior

EAST LANSING, Mich. — More than 10 volunteers from the City of East Lansing and Greater Lansing Housing Coalition’s (GLHC) Tuesday Toolmen program will undertake a housing repair project at 621 W. Lake Lansing Road in East Lansing on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

The project will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is expected to take several hours to complete. Members of the media are welcome to attend.

Both organizations will work to replace and install new stairs attached to the front porch of the home, which is owned and occupied by a senior East Lansing resident. The project is being undertaken as part of the GLHC’s Tuesday Toolmen program, which provides low-income seniors or adults with permanent disabilities opportunities to make free, necessary repairs or improvements to their homes. Eligible activities include the installation of stairs, grab bars, stair treads, ramps, exterior doors, motion detectors for exterior lighting and much more.

“We are so excited to be able to partner on this project with the City of East Lansing,” said GLHC Executive Director Julie Powers. “Our volunteers really wanted to try and undertake one more ‘project of good’ before the holidays.”

“We are so appreciative that the Tuesday Toolmen group has agreed to work on this project with us,” said East Lansing Department of Planning, Building & Development Specialist Amy Schlusler. “In our day-to-day work in the East Lansing community we came across this senior resident in need of the help and wanted to figure out a way to lend a hand. We can’t wait to roll up our sleeves on Tuesday.”

The Tuesday Toolmen program is supported by the City of Lansing, GLHC, Tri-County Office on Aging, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, Habitat for Humanity Lansing, AARP, Capital Region Community Foundation, Fifth Third Bank and PNC Bank. Additional information regarding the Tuesday Toolmen program can be found online at http://www.glhc.org or by calling (517) 372-5980.
