EAST LANSING, Mich. – The City of East Lansing's contractor is continuing the lining of the 36" interceptor sewer through MSU’s Brody Complex, from Michigan Avenue to the Red Cedar River.
The work consists of cleaning the existing sewer, installing a cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP) by inversion, expanding and heating the lining in order for it to cure, and re-establishing flow. This process requires the use of a significant amount of potable water for the cleaning, inversion and curing processes. Residents in areas adjacent to the Brody Complex may periodically experience cloudy or rusty-colored water, similar to what is experienced during annual hydrant flushing.
Although the discolored water is safe and does not pose a health concern, residents are encouraged to check their water prior to doing laundry or other home projects in which discolored water could present a problem. Should residents experience discolored water; they are advised to run cold water through a non-aerated faucet, such as a bathtub or outdoor water spigot, for five to 10 minutes until the water becomes clear. Residents are also advised to avoid using hot water before checking the cold water to prevent discolored water from entering their hot water heater.
The contractor is scheduled to complete the work by January 6, 2017. Residents with questions can contact the East Lansing Department of Public Works at (517) 337-9459.
