EAST LANSING, Mich. — (SCENE) Metrospace, 110 Charles Street, will open its upcoming exhibit, “Beyond Material,” at a free public opening on Friday, Jan. 16 from 6 - 9 p.m.
“Beyond Material” is a traveling exhibition of work conceptually responding to the history of fiber and textiles as craft and art. The exhibition runs Jan. 17 through Feb. 22.
We interact with the materiality of fiber on a daily basis, whether hand or machine made. The richness that fiber work creates is seen through the ease in which viewers can relate to its tactile quality. Beyond the material, the techniques employed provide another layer for a viewer to ente
“Beyond Material” is guest-curated by Grand Rapids-based creative Kate Garman. This is the exhibition’s second incarnation. Many new artists have been added. The inaugural exhibition opened during January 2014 at Grand Valley State University's Padnos Art Gallery.
Confirmed artists include Kelly McKaig, Miriam Wassenaar, Mandy Cano Villalobos, Dulcee Boehm, Ann Cole, SiSi Chen, Sarah Lillegard, Ellie Hunter, Anny Crane, Rachel de Cuba, Peter Clouse, Liz Ensz, Jessica Pleyel, Maggie Vance and Mandi Michielsen.
