[ARCHIVED] East Lansing Police Department Warns Residents of Phone Scam Involving ELPD Phone Number

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) has been made aware that the ELPD non-emergency business number has been compromised.

Some residents have reported that they have been receiving phone calls from an individual that demands they make a payment on a past due account. The individual threatens the receiver with arrest if payment is not made. Caller ID shows that this call is coming from ELPD’s non-emergency business line, (517) 351-4220.

The ELPD is actively working to resolve this problem. Residents are encouraged to hang up and report the call by contacting (517) 351-4220 ext. 6897.

“The ELPD does not attempt to collect fines via telephone.” said Lt. Steve Gonzalez. “Residents are reminded to never provide personal information over the telephone, including bank account information, social security numbers, date of births, etc.”
