EAST LANSING, Mich. – The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) recently undertook an endeavor with the Lansing Unit of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to develop and implement a Fair and Impartial Policing policy.
This policy re-affirms ELPD’s commitment to unbiased, equitable treatment of all persons. The policy establishes protections against bias-based policing and supervisory oversight to ensure the appropriate procedures are followed.
Further, the policy addresses ELPD’s approach to federal immigration enforcement. The policy ensures that officers will only detain or arrest an individual wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or Customs and Border Patrol in accordance with a valid judicial warrant.
ELPD’s policies and procedures, including the new Fair and Impartial Policing policy, can be found at https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/1790/Policies-Procedures.
