[ARCHIVED] Community Members Advised of Potential Flooding in East Lansing

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Community members are advised that there is the potential for minor flooding in East Lansing due to the melting snow and continuing rainfall, which is expected to extend into tomorrow, Feb. 21 and reach up to 2.5 inches.

As a result of the current and ongoing weather conditions, the Red Cedar River is expected to rise from the current level of 5.44 feet to the Minor Flood Level of 9.5 feet later in the week. For the latest updates on the Red Cedar River’s current and forecasted level, visit http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=grr&gage=elnm4&refresh=true.

Potential impacts of this weather event could include flooding or standing water in low-lying areas of the community and campus, including, but not limited to: Kalamazoo Street, the Kalamazoo-US 127 ramp and Valley Court Park. Flooding may also occur in unexpected places, such as backyards. Additionally, there is the potential for basement backups.

Community members should keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid driving vehicles through moving water
  • Report any flooding on streets/roadways to the East Lansing Department of Public Works (DPW) at (517) 337-9459
  • If a street has been barricaded by DPW, avoid driving on it
  • If a catch basin appears to be obstructed, contact DPW at (517) 337-9459 or, if comfortable doing so, attempt to clear the basin
  • Report basement backups to DPW at (517) 337-9459 and learn more here: https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/246/Sewer-Backup-Info
