EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) has been made aware that the ELPD non-emergency phone number, (517) 351-4220, continues to be compromised and is being used to attempt to scam residents out of money.
Residents continue to report that they have been receiving phone calls from an individual who demands they make a payment on a past due account. The individual threatens the caller with arrest if payment is not made. Caller ID incorrectly shows that this call is coming from ELPD’s non-emergency phone number, (517) 351-4220.
ELPD is actively working to resolve this problem. If residents receive a call that appears to be a phone scam, they are encouraged to hang up and report it by calling (517) 351-4220 ext. 6897.
“ELPD does not attempt to collect fines via telephone,” said ELPD Lt. Steve Gonzalez. “Residents are reminded to never provide personal information over the phone, including bank account information, social security numbers, their date of birth, etc.”
