EAST LANSING, Mich. – Community members are advised that the City of East Lansing’s Northern Tail Dog Park, located at 6400 Abbot Road, will be closed over the 2018-2019 winter season. The park is scheduled to be closed from December 3, 2018 to April 8, 2019.
The purpose for the seasonal closure of the Northern Tail Dog Park is to prevent considerable wear and tear to park grounds, which has occurred over past winter seasons due to park use during freeze-thaw periods and periods when the soil is wet and muddy.
In the fall of 2017, the City completed extensive work to improve drainage and restore grass at the park, which required a long-term closure. In an effort to prevent another long-term closure in the future, City staff plans to begin closing the park each winter season, similar to many other recreational facilities in the East Lansing community. Other park facilities that close over the winter months include the East Lansing Soccer Complex, the East Lansing Softball Complex, the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center and all bathrooms in City parks.
Signs have been installed at the park to notify park users of the upcoming seasonal closure.
“We appreciate the community’s understanding during this seasonal closure,” said East Lansing Parks, Recreation & Arts Director Tim McCaffrey. “This closure will ensure the long-term viability of the park and prevent the need for significant restoration in future years.”
