[ARCHIVED] Media Invited to MLK Commission’s MLK Holiday Art Contest Unveiling and Check Presentation

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Members of the media and community are invited to two special events that will be hosted by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan next week.

MLK Holiday Art Contest Unveiling
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan, in partnership with the Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum at MSU, will be announcing and unveiling the winners of the the inaugural MLK Holiday Art Contest at a special event on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the MSU Broad Art Lab, 565 E. Grand River Ave.

The MLK Holiday Art Contest invited students in grades 6-12 to submit artwork that took into consideration the theme of this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Luncheon: “Be the Change You Wish to See in the World.”

Six student winners were selected, including 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the middle school and high school categories. Prizes included $500, $350 and $150 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners respectively. The student winners will be recognized at the Tuesday, Jan. 15 unveiling and all of the student artwork submitted as a part of this year’s contest will be displayed at the MSU Broad Art Lab from Jan. 15-Jan. 22.

Check Presentation
A special check presentation for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan will take place on Friday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.

Cinnaire will present the MLK Commission with a generous $50,000 check during the special presentation. Additionally, MacDonald Broadcasting will present a $50,000 check (in-kind support), Jackson will present a $15,000 check and the MSU Federal Credit Union and Delta Dental will each present $10,000 checks. All members of the media are welcome to attend. East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows, Lansing Mayor Andy Schor and representatives from the sponsor organizations will make remarks.

The funding will help support the MLK Commission, which works each year to support equality, diversity and social justice in the mid-Michigan community. Among its many accomplishments, the MLK Commission annually provides scholarships to graduating seniors, hosts essay contests for local middle school students and helps support a variety of community agencies.

The MLK Commission also hosts the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Luncheon each year in tribute to the inspiring civil rights leader. This year’s luncheon will take place on Monday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave. and will feature keynote speaker L. Douglas Wilder, the first African American elected Governor in US History.
