EAST LANSING, Mich. — With extremely cold temperatures in the forecast for this week, community members are advised that the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road, and East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbot Road, will be available as warming centers for those in need.
These warming centers will be available from Jan. 28-31 during regular business hours. ELHCC’s hours are 6 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday-Friday; and ELPL’s hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Thursday. The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) will be available to transport individuals to overnight shelters as needed and City of East Lansing officials will be monitoring the weather closely and will coordinate with the American Red Cross if long-term sheltering becomes necessary.
According to the latest updates from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the coldest temperatures are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Temperatures could get as low as -35 degrees Fahrenheit. Community members are encouraged to bundle up and limit time outside. Community members are also reminded to only use heating devices in homes that are designed for indoor use. In addition to the extreme cold, snowfall is expected to begin tonight and continue throughout the day on Monday. To aid in more effective snow plowing by East Lansing Department of Public Works crews, community members are encouraged to refrain from parking on streets if possible. Community members are also encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel as road conditions deteriorate. As of now, all City facilities are expected to open on Monday, Jan. 28 at regular times.
