EAST LANSING, Mich. — After consultation with the East Lansing Mayor, East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas has declared a snow emergency. City of East Lansing offices will be closing early at 12:30 p.m. today, Jan. 28 and all evening meetings have been canceled.
As a part of the emergency declaration, on-street parking is prohibited in the East Lansing community from 6 p.m. today to 6 a.m. tomorrow, Jan. 29. This on-street parking ban will aid in more effective snow plowing operations for East Lansing Department of Public Works (DPW) crews, who will be continuing to work around the clock to keep the East Lansing community safe. Parking in downtown East Lansing’s gated lots and garages will be free for the remainder of the day for those who need a location to park extra vehicles.
Currently, DPW crews are focusing on major streets, with plans to move to residential streets overnight. Community members are encouraged to drive for the conditions and to avoid unnecessary travel.
The East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC) will remain open during regular hours today to continue to serve as a location for individuals who need a place to warm up. ELHCC’s hours are 6 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday-Friday. Community members are encouraged to call ELHCC at (517) 333-2580 ext. 0 to check on the status of afternoon/evening programming. The East Lansing Public Library will be closing early today at 12:30 p.m., but will be open later in the week (as weather permits) to serve as an additional location for individuals who need a place to warm up. The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) will be available to transport individuals to overnight shelters as needed.
Due to the extremely cold temperatures forecasted for this week, enforcement of sidewalk snow/ice removal requirements for property owners has been temporarily suspended for the next 48 hours. An update will be provided if this temporary suspension is extended.
City officials are continuously monitoring the weather forecasts/conditions and will provide updates as necessary. To stay-up-to-date on all weather-related alerts and advisories, community members are encouraged to sign up for Nixle (ELPD notifications) and Everbridge (Ingham County notifications): https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/172/Sign-Up-for-Emergency-Alerts. Community members should call 911 in the event of an emergency and 211 for non-emergency assistance.
