[ARCHIVED] Human Relations Commission’s Coffee & Conversation Series Continues with LGBTQIA+ Edition

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Human Relations Commission (HRC) Coffee & Conversation series continues with an LGBTQIA+ edition on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 2-4 p.m. at Blue Owl Coffee, 213 Ann St., Ste. C. The series provides a monthly forum for community discussions on topics of diversity and inclusion.

“The HRC is the body tasked with investigating and protecting human rights and dignity within our city. And while every Commissioner is committed to fighting for every right of each of our protected classes, the best way to effectively represent the voice of our community is to meet them where they are and learn from their experiences,” said HRC Chair Talyce Murray. “This month’s LGBTQIA+ edition is continuing the conversation we are having as a City this month around the best ways to advocate and protect the rights of our LGBTQIA+ community members. On Sept. 10, the East Lansing City Council approved a ban on conversion therapy, but what else can we do to help protect our community members?"

The Coffee & Conversation series was launched in response to feedback from community members at previous organized events and will continue to feature monthly informal conversations around a single-topic issue at rotating East Lansing locations. Topics will be related to a variety of human rights issues and will be hosted by rotating members of the HRC.

The next session will be a Disabilities & Accessibility edition, which will take place Sunday, Oct. 20 from 1-3 p.m. at the Grand Traverse Pie Company in Brookfield Plaza, 1331 E Grand River Ave. Additional sessions will be announced on the City’s website calendar, www.cityofeastlansing.com, and social media: https://www.facebook.com/cityofeastlansing and https://twitter.com/CityofEL.
