City of East Lansing Closure Dates and Extra Holiday Collection Schedules

EAST LANSING, Mich. — City of East Lansing offices will have adjusted schedules in observance of the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

East Lansing City Hall, the East Lansing Department of Public Works (DPW) and East Lansing 54-B District Court will be closed Friday, Dec. 22 and Monday, Dec. 25, reopening on Tuesday, Dec. 26. These offices will also be closed on Friday, Dec. 29 and Monday, Jan. 1, reopening on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.

The East Lansing Public Library (ELPL) will be closed from Friday, Dec. 22-Monday, Dec. 25, reopening on Tuesday, Dec. 26. The ELPL will also be closed from Friday, Dec. 29-Monday, Jan. 1. It will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.

The East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC) will be closed Friday, Dec. 22-Monday, Dec. 25, reopening on Tuesday, Dec. 26. ELHCC will close at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29 and remain closed through Monday, Jan. 1, reopening on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024 at 8 a.m.

The Prime Time Seniors Program will be closed from Friday, Dec. 22-Monday, Jan. 1, reopening on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.

REGULAR RECYCLING & TRASH COLLECTION

Friday trash and curbside recycling pickup will be picked up as normal and will NOT be affected by the holiday closures on Dec. 22 or Dec. 29; however, there will be no bulky item pickup on Monday, Dec. 25 or Monday, Jan. 1. 

Additionally, the City is offering no-fee holiday trash collection from Tuesday, Dec. 26-Friday, Jan. 5. Community members can dispose of extra trash without needing to use a yellow City bag. Trash is collected on residents’ regular collection day. Bags must weigh no more than 40 pounds. There will also be a bonus recycling day on Monday, Jan. 8. Community members are encouraged to download the Recycle Coach app from the App Store or Google Play to receive collection reminders and real-time updates on service disruptions by text.

HOLIDAY-SPECIFIC RECYLING

Live-cut Christmas trees will be collected if placed at the curb anytime from Tuesday, Jan. 2-Friday, Jan. 12, as well as at the following drop-off locations around the City:

  • Patriarche Park – parking lot on Alton Road
  • Emerson Park – Arbor Drive entrance
  • Fine Park – parking lot at Winchester Drive
  • Valley Court Park – south of Valley Court Community Center
  • White Memorial Park - parking lot at Pebblebrook Lane

All bags, ornaments, lights and tree stands should be removed before the tree is recycled, and if the tree is taller than 6 feet, it should be cut in half.

Holiday lights (both working and nonworking) can be dropped off inside the entrance at DPW, 1800 E. State Road during the hours the building is open, through Friday, Jan. 12.

The City offers free parking in downtown East Lansing on the following holidays:

  • Sunday, Dec. 24
  • Monday, Dec. 25
  • Sunday, Dec. 31
  • Monday, Jan. 1
